The 1602 version of Saint Matthew and the Angel by Caravaggio was a painting for the Contarelli Chapel that was rejected by patrons for being too "natural" and lacking decorum. The original work depicted St. Matthew as a rough, unlearned peasant guided by an angel, a realistic but irreverent portrayal that was replaced with a more dignified second version titled The Inspiration of Saint Matthew.
