Edgar Degas's Café-Concert series captures the vibrant, gritty nightlife of late 19th-century Paris, specifically the popular outdoor and indoor venues where working-class entertainment met high society. Unlike many of his Impressionist peers who focused on leisure, Degas was fascinated by the artifice of performance, the harsh effects of gaslighting, and the candid, sometimes awkward poses of the performers.

Degas frequently used monotype (a type of printmaking that produces a single unique print) as a base, then layered pastel over it to achieve rich textures and luminous colors. His compositions often feature "Japanese-style" cropping—cutting off figures or objects at the edge of the frame—to make the scene feel like a spontaneous snapshot of Parisian life.
