Vincent van Gogh's Irises (1889) is an oil painting created at the asylum in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence shortly after he voluntarily admitted himself for a mental health crisis. The work is a detailed, vibrant study of the asylum's garden, featuring thick, impastoed brushstrokes, bold, contrasting colors, and a composition influenced by Japanese prints. Despite its personal context, Van Gogh considered it a study, but his brother Theo recognized its merit by including it in the Salon des Indépendants that same year.
