Nude on a Blue Cushion (1917).

Part of a series of provocative reclining nudes created between 1916 and 1919, the work is a prime example of Modigliani's uniquely stylized modern art. The original is housed at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C

Artist: Amedeo Modigliani.
Date: 1917.
Medium: Oil on canvas.
Style: Expressionism.

Key features: Characteristic of Modigliani's style, the female form is elongated, with a graceful, sculptural quality. The simplified features, such as the almond-shaped eyes and upturned nose, are also prominent.
Reception: When his nudes were first exhibited, they were considered provocative and caused a scandal. However, they are now celebrated as innovative works of 20th-century art.
