Van Gogh painted the initial version of the work outdoors (en plein air) in late June 1889, a view he observed from his window at the asylum towards the Alpilles mountains. He later created two studio renditions of the same subject in September. The paintings are known for their vibrant colours and dynamic, swirling brushstrokes (impasto), which Van Gogh used to convey movement and vitality in the landscape. He considered the first version of this work one of his "best" summer landscapes.
